1950s Revlon advert

1950s model Gita Hall in a Revlon nail polish advert from July Vogue 1957. How exotic does ‘Persian Melon’ sound? I’m not sure about the description: ‘A luscious golden melon with a coral flavor’ though…?

‘Persian Melon’ Revlon’s new color for fingertips (and toe-tips, too!) Delicious example of what makes Revlon the fabulous nail enamel. A luscious golden melon with a coral flavor… in the shimmer of ‘Frosted’, so right for summer… or the elegance of Cream Nail Enamel. And pick ‘Persian Melon’ lipstick, too!

      Hi Krissie
Interesting article, thanks for posting it. It’s interesting that she’s suing over the use of her image in Mad Men even though she isn’t claiming to be the copyright holder of the image. I thought it was all about who owned rights to the photo rather than everyone having rights to whether images of themselves are used. It’ll be interesting to see the results of the case.

I’m interested to see how it turns out myself. My understanding (as a photographer my whole life) would be that Revlon owns the image. After that, if the agreement expires for any reason, the copyright belongs to the photographer. I’m also pretty sure, with the attention given to detail on that show, that the image was used properly. Now that she’s made such a fuss, I can’t help but notice that image every time I see it. I doubt she’d be due much money even if she is right, but we’ll see!

But as you said, use of one’s image goes along with ownership of the copyright. She would have signed a professional release which eliminates her ability to control how that particular image is used.

You’ve made me wonder whether it’s OK to have the image on here now?! What do you think? I got it from a creative commons license from flickr…?

          • Krissie

I’m sure it’s ok. The statue of limitations would have long run out by now and if you have a CC license, you’re fine. You’re reprinting editorially with proper credit, so no worries. If you tried to use it to sell something, that’d be a different story.

I know I like my nail polish to have a coral flavour…but I really don’t advise eating it.

Me neither. Coral flavoured nail polish, hmmm. I’ve just bought what I would call a coral-flavoured lipstick. Don’t much fancy eating that either ;)
