English: Original studio publicity photo of Cary Grant for the film I Was a Male War Bride (1949). Doesn’t he look dashing in a uniform? He had the mole on his cheek removed the year after this photo was taken. I don’t know whether Cary Grant actually was in the armed forces during the war, does anyone know?

No, he didn’t. He tried to join the British Army (he only became an American citizen in 1942) but didn’t succeed to do so (paperwork it seems). He supported the British and US war efforts by giving some money to produce propaganda movies.

Hi Dirk, what a fascinating article, thanks for sharing. I adore Cary Grant but know very little about Archie Leach. You’ve confirmed that I need to go out and find myself a good biography of him to read!
