This week’s vintage fashion inspiration comes from Audrey Hepburn in the 1954 movie Sabrina – one of my all-time favourite Hepburn movies. If rumours are correct she was mostly dressed by Givenchy in this movie although costume-designer Edith Head won an Oscar for them. Either way she looked fabulous throughout! I’ve picked 3 of my favourite outfits. Sadly though I couldn’t find a modern-day equivalent of that amazing white embroidered gown she wore (above) but if you know of one let me know!
On the subject of that amazing gown, I always assumed that it was white with black embroidery but I found a colour photo of it (you can see it on my Pinterest board here) the embroidery is actually gold and brown which makes it look totally different. With this in mind I decided I liked her smart suit outfit in red with cream accessories – what do you think?
Hat | Gloves | Jacket | Skirt | Shoes
and here it is in the movie. You can see much better photos of it here.
Another outfit of hers I’ve always loved is her pinafore-style patterned dress. Here’s my version:
and here Audrey is sneaking around in some bushes wearing her outfit (again you can see better photos here).
Vying for top-spot in the ‘best outfits’ from Sabrina is her amazing black dress with bows on the straps. If you look at Edith Head’s original sketch of this outfit you can see how much she wanted the hat to look like cat ears, so I couldn’t resist adding this cute felt hat too.Sadly I couldn’t find a dress with bows and the right silhouette so I had to mix and match, but it’s definitely possible to get the look if you use your imagination!
If you fancy some more Sabrina you can see some great photos from it on my Pinterest board here. What do you think of the outfits I chose – which one is most Audrey?
