in Miami. Aren’t these great? I love the different hairstyles, some are so fancy. I wonder whether they wore their hair like this every day or whether it was a special effort on photo day?
Can you tell from the photos who the different class personalities are? Who was the popular girl, the geek, the swot, the quiet one?

Wow, this was sweet!
Alot of big, Alfred E. Neuman-type ears on the guys.
The thing that I find interesting is that these were taken at a time before the “teenager” became a big pop culture item, in movies and music and the like.
What this means is that these teens likely did not have many teen pop culture figures to imitate (well, maybe Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland come closest).
They’re really natural and free of media fakery, to a large extent.
Thanks a billion for posting!
Hi Dar, glad you liked them, I’ve also found some from other years in the 1940s and 30s and I found them fascinating. As you say, there was no real teen culture at the time, so they are very much aspiring to adult role models and look so grown up for their age! I’ll definitely share the other photos too as soon as I get a chance!
I have several college yearbooks from the late forties, and I pull them out whenever I need a laugh 🙂 Most of the boys in the pictures have these super elaborate quiffs flying off of their heads. It looks a bit like they’ve piled cotton candy on the top of their scalps. I guess that was the fashion back in the day. It sure seems silly now! These were really lovely though. I’m jealous of those girls hair styling skills!
