What the Creature From the Black Lagoon Really Looked Like!

The Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of those iconic monsters that everyone recognizes, like King Kong, Dracula and Frankensteins’s Monster. Unsurprisingly he was much better looking without his head on! Ricou Browning played the Gill-man in all 3 Creature movies, but only in the underwater scenes – different actors played the creature on land. I’m not sure why!

Interestingly Browning went on to direct movies and was responsible for the underwater scenes in 2 James Bond movies: Thunderball (1965) and Never Say Never Again (1983).

Here he is photographed during a break in filming at Wakulla Springs in1953

Ricou Browning was an Olympic level swimmer and more than adept at handling all the underwater scenes for The Creature but was considered “too short” for the scenes on dry land where inevitable comparisons would be made to the other actors. The Creature would have been much less menacing if he were substantially SMALLER than the men trying to stop his rampage, and may have also had a problem in scenes where he “gets his girl” and carries her in his arms like a proud groom. I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Browning AND Ben Chapman who played the gill man on land in all movies.
