Thank the Lord for modern swimwear…

Thank the Lord for modern swimwear…

If I was having my photo taken in wet woolen swimwear I think I’d close my eyes too… I know we all reminisce about the gorgeousness of vintage swimwear, and how it’s all more stylish and more lovely than lycra, but I think even a pair of tiny budgie-smugglers would be more flattering than these(…)

A gorgeous 1970s afro

A gorgeous 1970s afro

A student with fabulous 1970s hair at the Westinghouse Industrial Vocation School On Chicago’s West Side, May 1973. I wish I could see the rest of her outfit, the bit of her 70s print shirt that I can see looks gorgeous!

Woah, who’d be a lion tamer eh?

Woah, who’d be a lion tamer eh?

Wow, this photo raises lots of conflicting emotions in me (but I suspect that’s the sign that it’s a good photograph!). I have an enormous amount of admiration for this lady who must have nerves of steel, and I also feel sorry for the lions, who should never have been in captivity like this.  Similar to(…)

George Washington’s teeth

George Washington’s teeth

George Washington’s teeth which, contrary to popular myth, weren’t made of wood. He had various pairs, and the pair he had when he became president were made from hippo and elephant ivory with gold springs.  I’m not sure whether the pair above are those, but they certainly look about right don’t they?  Washington suffered from problems(…)

Stella Carol, 1915

Stella Carol, 1915

Singer Stella Carol photographed in 1915. It’s a shame this photo is so damaged, I think I might use my PhotoShop skills to try and repair it… Stella Carol, age 17, a well-known soprano, and her husband, Albert Leblond, were passengers aboard the White Star Company Arabic when it was torpedoed without warning on August(…)

Goodwood Revival 2013: The 20 best womens outfits

Goodwood Revival 2013: The 20 best womens outfits

I’m getting Goodwood Revival withdrawal now. It’s been a few weeks since that glorious vintage weekend and I’m feeling a little sad that I’ve got to wait another 11 months until it comes around again. I’ve been cheering myself up by looking at Matt Hind’s amazing photo portraits of the Best Dressed at Goodwood. Aren’t(…)

Joan Crawford wearing a LOT of makeup, 1930

Joan Crawford wearing a LOT of makeup, 1930

I love all the early photos of Joan Crawford from the 1920s and early 1930s. They’re so different from the severe studio shots from the late 30s and 1940s and she looks like a completely different person. This photo was taken in 1930.

Building the Eiffel Tower

Building the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower was built over a period of 2 years between 1887 and 1889. These photos show how it grew over the months and years during construction. It’s hard to imagine Paris before the Eiffel Tower existed isn’t it? [8 photos]

Irene Castle with her pet dog (or is it a fox?)

Irene Castle with her pet dog (or is it a fox?)

Dancers Vernon and Irene Castle with their pets ‘Wolf’ and ‘Waldo’ on board a ship c. 1910. It’s hard to make out the dog that Irene is holding, I’m not sure whether the tail is part of a fur wrap, or whether Waldo is actually a pet fox…? Can you make it out? You can(…)

Now they look a handful! 1960s girl with 3 lion cubs

Now they look a handful! 1960s girl with 3 lion cubs

This girl looks like she’s having a lovely cuddle with these lion cubs. I don’t know whether she was a model posing for this photo or whether she was just a girl photographed having some lion-time, what do you think? Those cubs look like they’re starting to wriggle to me and are going to become(…)

1930s cruise fashions

1930s cruise fashions

2 stylish ladies and a baby on board a boat sometime in the 1930s. I’d love to know what colour these dresses were – what do you think?

Joan Crawford, 1920s

Joan Crawford, 1920s

A striking photo of Joan Crawford in the 1920s. I love the way the silhouette and shadows really add to the composition of this picture. Isn’t it stunning?

A 1900s lesbian couple?

A 1900s lesbian couple?

I’m not sure quite what’s going on in this photo. Are they a lesbian couple (which I’m guessing would have been pretty scandalous at this time), or is the woman dressing as a man because her husband wasn’t around and a lady couldn’t sit on an ‘actual’ man’s lap without losing her reputation…? There’s no(…)

My first attempt at colorizing a photo

My first attempt at colorizing a photo

This is my first attempt at colorizing a vintage photo (below), what do you think? I love the original photo party because of the fabulous hairstyles of the two women. One of the women is wearing a “peysuföt” (a traditional Icelandic Costume) and the other a Danish dress. The photo was taken sometime between 1900-1920.(…)

Vintage women’s boxing: late 1800s to 1920s

Vintage women’s boxing: late 1800s to 1920s

I assumed that women’s boxing was a fairly new sport, after all it was only included in the Olympics last year for the first time, but from these photos you can see it was going on (although with varying degrees of inappropriate outfits) since at least the late 1880s. I’m guessing it wasn’t a mainstream(…)
