The Macaroon: cute flowergirl or lumpy teen bridesmaid?

The Macaroon: cute flowergirl or lumpy teen bridesmaid?

If meringues are the showstopping bride of the dessert trolly, then macaroons are her cute pastel coloured flowergirls. Or at least they’re supposed to be. Instead of being cute 6-year olds in pastel dresses my macaroons turned out more like *that* teenage cousin you feel obliged to have as a bridesmaid (you know the one,(…)

This week I wish I was wearing…

Now that there’s *finally* been a change in the weather I’m craving a new wardrobe to make the most of the glorious sunshine! Here are some of my favourite vintage looks from the past week or so. This amazing retro green polka dot dress as worn by Retro Chic This lovely sixties-style blue and white(…)

1930s racegoers

1930s racegoers

Two very chic racegoers, I’m guessing from the fashions that this was taken in the 1930s. If this were today they’d be looking at their mobile phones instead of racing slips!

1930s Marlene Dietrich look-alike in a saree

1930s Marlene Dietrich look-alike in a saree

This advert from 1936 is from a Lucky Strike advert (hence the cigarette I suppose). I don’t know who the model is, but she looks like Marlene Dietrich wearing a fabulous orange saree (perhaps a wedding one – anyone know enough about bridal sarees to confirm?). I guess that was probably intentional, Dietrich was one(…)

1920s girls playing in the surf

1920s girls playing in the surf

It’s tipping it down with rain here today and I’m sitting here with a living room full of new garden furniture which needs oiling before it goes out in the garden. Oh how I *wish* we had the weather to be frolicking in the surf like these 1920s girls! Isn’t this photo great? I love(…)

Something even better than strawberries & cream in Wimbledon week

Something even better than strawberries & cream in Wimbledon week

What’s better than eating sweet English strawberries whilst watching Wimbledon? Eating chocolate-dipped English strawberries, that’s what! With the addition of some Choco-Leibnitz biscuits if you’re feeling particularly piggy! I don’t really need to give you a recipe for chocolate dipped strawberries, it’s all very simple (just strawberries and melted chocolate). However  it IS possible to(…)

Come join the conversation…

Come join the conversation…

I’m having a bit of a social experiment. Blogging is all about community, right? Well, I think so, so I decided to create a Vintage Fashion Forum! I’m not too sure how it’s going to work yet – it’s got a place for you to ask vintage fashion questions and to give a shout out(…)

A very stylish outfit from 1912

A very stylish outfit from 1912

Parisienne vintage winter fashion from 1912: A ladies walking costume consisting of a slender cut dress and a coat done up diagonally, trimmed with a fur collar and cuffs. Isn’t this stylish? I had no idea that pre-1920s fashion was this chic, I thought it was all bustles and corsets!

1920s photo: another lost beauty

1920s photo: another lost beauty

Another beautiful portrait of a woman whose name has got lost somewhere in the mists of time. She was photographed in 1924 by Frank A. Kunishige and may (or may not) have been called Betti. I love her beautiful hat (and very serious expression, she looks like she may have been a bit cross with(…)

Vintage swimwear: 1940s bikinis

Vintage swimwear: 1940s bikinis

Some great 1940s bikinis modelled by the ‘Sarasota Sun-Debs’. The photo was taken at Lido Beach, Florida in January 1949. I wish it was warm enough to wear bikinis in January in the UK!

Dressing for the Goodwood Revival: 1960s style

Dressing for the Goodwood Revival: 1960s style

The thing about wearing vintage fashion is that you can’t afford to leave your shopping until the last minute. If you want that perfect item you really need to snap it up when you see it, and I’ve completely fallen for this vintage 1960s dress. Sadly I can’t quite afford it at the moment, and(…)

The realities of war: 1940s breast-protecters (yes, really)

The realities of war: 1940s breast-protecters (yes, really)

I know industrial accidents are no laughing matter, but I’d seriously never considered a need for breast-protecters before (as modelled so beautifully by this brave lady).  I guess it’s just the female equivalent of a cricket box, I wonder whether they’re still worn in certain industries today…? This photo is from 1943.  The original caption(…)

1960s stewardesses (or are they air hostesses?)

1960s stewardesses (or are they air hostesses?)

I’m not quite sure of the right terminology to use, is it PC to call these ladies stewardesses? Flight attendants? Air hostesses? I’m sure you’re not allowed to use some of those phrases today but I really have no idea. Anyhoo, these ladies worked for PSA in the 1960s – don’t you just love those(…)

3 vintage beauty queens from the 1920s

3 vintage beauty queens from the 1920s

These 3 vintage beauties are the winners of a Beauty contest at the Venetian Pool in Coral Gables, Florida in 1924. Who do you think was the winner and who were the runners up? Or do you think they were winners in 3 different categories…?

My vintage kitchen: French meringues

My vintage kitchen: French meringues

I love cooking. Especially on a Sunday when there’s no rushing around to do and the family sits around relaxing and enjoying the smell of a Sunday roast cooking in the oven. The part I really love though is the pudding. I only make puddings on a Sunday, so it always feels extra special, and(…)

Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo in tweed

Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo in tweed

Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. I don’t know when this photo was taken but I would guess mid-1960s. I always thought Robert Vaughn was super cool….

An enigmatic 1960s portrait with baggy fishnets

I have a real fascination for portraits of unknown people. Like the forgotten beauties from a few days ago the only thing known about this woman is when and where she was photographed. The photo was taken by American photographer James Jowers in Washington Sq Park in 1968, but nothing is known about the subject(…)
